Oh, Cainy Boy, how has it already been a year?! It seems like you’ve always been in our family, yet at the same time it seems like I was JUST pregnant! Your blueberry loving self has brought a whole new level of fun to our family. As a baby photographer in Iowa, I get a lot of requests for cake smashes (click here to inquire) and I know that usually babies aren’t that into cake. I knew Cain wouldn’t care about his cake at all but, seriously, this kid could live on blueberries! I did the same thing with his big sister on her birthday (you can view her strawberry cake smash here) and it did the trick! Countertop Cakes in North Liberty did such a beautiful job of creating a simple and unique cake.
I’m still in disbelief that this little boy is turning one, but also that he is only one. If you have the pleasure of meeting him, you will see how mature he is! I swear I was just pregnant yesterday but it also feels like Cain has just always been in our family. He has been trying to keep up with his big sister from day one. He is fearless, he is strong, he is goofy, he is sweet. Everything a little boy should be. My favorite thing about him is how alert and attentive he is. I had so many people tell me at his birthday party they have never seen a one year old be genuinely interested in every single present. He didn’t care about ripping paper, he just wanted to explore each toy. Don’t let his inquisitive nature fool you though, he’s the first to belly flop into a pool or climb furniture, all while giggling and looking to see if you are having as much fun as he is. I can’t wait to see what Cain has in store for the world. We are definitely in for an interesting ride!
The days seem to fly by, but this also seems like the longest year ever. I’ve tried really hard to be present with my kids this year to appreciate the little moments (which may mean I take a little bit longer to email you back and my blog and Instagram might be lacking). Having 2 kids under 2 is…hard. It’s really easy to just be overwhelmed all the time. But when I’m old, this will be what I look back on as the best years of my life. I don’t want to go through them in a huff, I want to realize how great it is while I’m here. Adding another baby to our family has shown us the infinite supply of love and it’s ability to keep multiplying. While Evie brought us joy, Cain has brought us appreciation.
